How the Sezzle Virtual Card works

When you want to shop at a store that doesn't offer Sezzle at checkout, you generate a single-use virtual card inside the Sezzle app. It has a real Visa number, expiration, and CVV that works at any merchant accepting Visa.

The card is linked to a specific purchase amount you specify (up to your approved limit). Merchant sees a normal Visa transaction — Sezzle handles the backend splitting into four installments.

Setting up the virtual card

  1. Open the Sezzle app, tap "Sezzle Anywhere" or "Virtual Card".
  2. Enter your planned purchase amount.
  3. Sezzle generates a card with Visa number, expiration, CVV.
  4. Copy details into merchant checkout OR add to Apple Wallet / Google Pay.
  5. Complete checkout. Sezzle auto-splits into 4 installments.

Where it works (and doesn't)

Works at: Amazon, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, most online retailers, in-store via Apple Pay / Google Pay at Visa terminals.

Doesn't work at: gas pumps (pre-authorization causes declines), recurring subscriptions, rental car deposits, some hotel check-ins.

Service fees on virtual card

Some virtual card transactions carry a service fee of up to $7.49, displayed at card generation time — you can cancel if too high. Not all purchases trigger a fee.

Our testing verdict

The virtual card works exactly as advertised at major retailers. We successfully used it at Amazon, Target, Walmart, and several smaller US e-commerce sites. Service fees appeared on ~30% of test transactions.

How the Sezzle Virtual Card works technically

The Sezzle Virtual Card is a single-use or limited-use Visa card generated on-demand within the Sezzle mobile app. When you create a virtual card, Sezzle generates a 16-digit Visa card number, expiration date, and CVV linked to the specific purchase amount you entered. The card can be used for one transaction at the approved amount, then typically deactivates automatically. Some virtual cards remain active for a short window (24 hours) to allow for potential recharges or pre-authorizations.

Because the card is a standard Visa, it works at any US merchant accepting Visa — including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, most gas stations, hotels, airlines, and essentially any online retailer with a Visa checkout option. This universal compatibility is the virtual card's primary value proposition: it closes the gap between Sezzle's ~7,000 direct-integration US retailers and the 100,000+ retailers shoppers might want to use BNPL at.

When the merchant charges the virtual card, Sezzle treats the transaction as a Pay-in-4 installment plan against that amount. The first 25% is effectively immediate (charged against your linked payment method), and the remaining three installments follow the standard bi-weekly schedule. From the merchant's perspective, they simply processed a Visa transaction — no Sezzle integration required on their end.

Setting up sezzle apps virtual card

Open the Sezzle app and tap the "Virtual Card" option from the main dashboard. Enter the amount you want to spend (up to your available spending power), then select the merchant category if prompted. Sezzle will display any disclosed service fee for this specific transaction — typically $0 at major retailers, up to $7.49 at certain categories or smaller merchants. You can cancel at this step with no cost if the fee is unacceptable.

After confirmation, Sezzle generates the card details: 16-digit number, expiration date, CVV, and the authorized amount. You can copy these details directly or, on iOS, add the card to Apple Wallet for tap-to-pay at physical retailers. On Android, Google Pay integration works similarly. The card is typically live for 24 hours — long enough to complete a purchase and handle minor pre-authorization holds.

The virtual card amount must match your actual purchase amount closely. If you generate a card for $75.00 but the merchant charges $75.23 (for example, shipping or tax calculated at checkout), the transaction may decline. Either regenerate the card for the correct total or use a padded amount (generate for $80.00 for a purchase expected to total $75-$80) to absorb small variance.

Using the virtual card at major retailers

At Amazon, the virtual card works on both desktop and the mobile app. Add the card as a new payment method in your Amazon account (Account > Payments > Add a payment method), enter the 16-digit number exactly as generated, and select it at checkout. Amazon may run a $0 pre-authorization to verify the card — this is normal and resolves within minutes.

At Target.com and Walmart.com, the process is similar: add the virtual card at checkout or in your saved payments. In physical Target and Walmart stores, add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Pay first, then tap-to-pay at the register. Both retailers' contactless payment terminals accept Visa tokenization from Apple Pay and Google Pay without issues.

At hotels and rental car companies, the virtual card works for the stated booking amount but typically cannot handle pre-authorization holds that exceed the card's authorized limit. For hotels expecting a $200 incidental hold on a $150/night room, you'd need a virtual card covering the hold amount (usually $350 or more) — which also pulls a larger BNPL balance against your Sezzle limit. Most users prefer traditional credit cards for hotel and rental car bookings for this reason.

When the virtual card may be declined

Virtual card declines typically come from one of four causes. First, insufficient available spending power on your Sezzle account — you can't generate a card exceeding your current approved limit. Second, amount mismatch between the card's authorized amount and the merchant's charge — even a small overage (shipping/tax) can trigger decline. Third, expired cards (typically 24 hours after generation) — regenerate if needed. Fourth, merchant category restrictions — some categories (cash advances, cryptocurrency, gambling, adult content) are blocked by Sezzle regardless of the card amount.

Pre-authorization holds are the most common unexpected decline cause. A gas station's $125 pre-authorization hold (before your actual pump amount is known) will fail against a virtual card generated for exactly $40. Pay inside the store instead, or generate a larger virtual card to cover the hold amount — and accept that the full hold amount commits against your Sezzle spending power temporarily.

Virtual card service fees on sezzle apps

Service fees on virtual card transactions range from $0 at many major retailers to $7.49 at smaller or certain-category merchants. The fee is always disclosed at card generation time before you confirm. To minimize service fees, check each generation's disclosed fee, prefer direct-integration Sezzle merchants where available (always zero fee), and consider the total cost including service fees when comparing Sezzle to an outright purchase via cash or a 0% credit card.

Sezzle Premium subscribers ($19.99/month) receive reduced or waived service fees on some virtual card transactions. For frequent virtual card users making multiple non-partner transactions per month, the Premium subscription may pay for itself in waived service fees alone — but this only makes sense at high transaction volume.

Alternatives to the Sezzle Virtual Card

If you prefer not to use the Sezzle Virtual Card for a particular purchase, alternatives include shopping at direct-integration Sezzle partners (7,000+ US retailers), using a different BNPL app with broader direct coverage (Klarna has 500,000+ global merchant partners), paying with a 0% promotional credit card, or waiting until funds are available in checking for outright payment. Each alternative has tradeoffs — the virtual card's universal Visa acceptance is hard to match in pure merchant flexibility.
